Petta is a character that we haven’t talked much about but he faces some true difficulties in this novel. He has to choose between fighting for his life to go back home or just letting himself die. At the begging of the book when they first got on the train he was sure that he was going to go into the games and not come out alive. Petta had no faith in himself when he should’ve known he could do just as much as Katniss just in different ways. As the book goes on and they are in the tribute center Petta is still dead set that he isn’t going to make it through the games. Where it gets interesting though is when the games starts because somehow he made allies with the top tributes. He probably thought that they would just kill him and he wanted it over with but they didn’t. Petta really starts fighting for his life when one of his allies cuts him with a sword. He gets away but has no food or water for no telling how many days. He was hidden very will with mud. Katniss found him in just the right amount of time and he starting fighting even harder because two tributes from the same district could both be the victors of the games and he knew with Katniss helping him they could win. Which they did after they almost killed each other with berries but he over came the fear of dying and trying to accept it.  257

Katniss is the most credible person in this book who feels as if she is on the outside because of her class. Katniss and her family live in the Seam where there is not many people who can eat on a daily basis. Her and her family work hard for what they can get. Katniss bought a goat for her sister Prim where they get all the milk they need and are able to make cheese. Katniss goes hunting on a daly basis and their mother heals people when doctors won’t. This gives them not a very high income. Really it’s little to none on most days. This meaning that around town and school katniss is looked down  upon because she basically has nothing. She’s not the normal girl that goes home to a meal that her mother has cooked because she does the hunting and then a lot of times does the cooking. People also feel bad for their family because they lost their father who brought in the food and money for them to eat on. Katniss has done her best to keep her family afloat no matter what society says about her and her family. She does everything she can and now that she has won the games is makes you think what its going to be like when she gets back because she won’t have to hunt and everyone in her town will be completely different around her just because she has made a big success.250

Cruelty can come in many forms. The one most present in The Hunger Games is that of unfairness. The capitol keeps everyone in districts. No way to talk to one another or to even know what happens in the other districts. The only time anyone gets to know about the districts is the games because two people from every district are put together and they can learn a lot about each district just by the way they are built and their personalities. They only way that the information can be told is by winning the games otherwise you aren’t alive to share it. The capitol also starves people in districts where their jobs don’t matter as much as the jobs in other districts. They see no need to help anyone because they believe they did it to themselves when districts turned on the capitol. That was many years ago but they still believe that all should be punished even if they weren’t even alive yet. The capitol wants to feel in control over them which they are completely. Since they are, the capitol makes sure they know it by having cameras and forcing them to be encaged in a certain area against the peoples will and the biggest one of all choosing two members of each district every year to fight for a their district for almost no reason but entertainment. This all just shows how crazy and cruel the capitol is to the people that just want to stay alive.  251

In this article it talks about food and how important it is for our lives. In The Hunger Games Katniss talks a lot about how she was always on the hunt for food. I mean literally on the hunt. Her family didn’t have the money to go and buy food all the time. Katniss would hunt for things for her family to eat or sometimes they would trade the animals she killed. Like when she killed a squirrel she would trade it with the baker for some bread. There was also a time in Katniss’s life where her and her family were starving. She didn’t want to go hunting because her and her father would do that together and he had just passed, so it was hard for her to do it without him. Petta who is her partner in the games had burned some bread at his fathers bakery and tossed it out too Katniss. She believes that without Petta doing that her and her family wouldn’t be alive to see even be in the drawing for the games. Katniss and Petta were also low on food during the games. They soon learned were to find the best berries and Katniss got a bow so she could go hunting instead of trying to trap the animals. Once Katniss blew up the stash of all the food that some of the tributes had made it seems as if they were having trouble finding food also. In their districts they never had to hunt for food or lean about what was safe to eat because it was always just given to them.  271

The poem I have selected goes with the story behind The Hunger Games perfectly. The poem is very short and straight to the point but it has away of taking what happened in the book and putting it into a few words. Katniss tried to stay away or above all the other tributes. Any little sound would wake her up because she was scared and wanted to stay on high alert. She gained scars from problems she faced while in the games. The times like when Katniss got burned and then again when she was fighting for the medicine for Peeta, she was cut by a knife above her eyebrow. Although when she got back to the capitol all her scars were removed even ones she didn’t get from being in the games, it was still important in the games because it showed what she went through. While Katniss was in the games there were only a handful of people that thought she was going to make it out. Coming from the poorest district, not being feed like some of the other tributes and the fact that district 12 hasn’t won the games in almost 30 years, it was unlikely that Katniss and Peeta would win. They made it out though, beat all the odds and made the capitol look like a fool in the process. Katniss was never really surrounded until the end when all the mutts were around the cornucopia. All the past tributes that had already passed were made into some kind of dogs trying to kill just another tribute, to make the games just a little more interesting for everyone watching.  275
